Park Avenue South, Harpenden

Harpenden
Hertfordshire | Private Client
Our client in Harpenden made the wise decision to remodel their existing house rather than search for a new home. They had settled in a lovely road in Harpenden and had the opportunity to make the most of their existing home. With some simple architectural changes and some beautiful upgrades including a new kitchen and an incredible sunken wine cellar, the work transformed the property to suit a busy family life for many years to come.
Having previously worked with the client to design their Master Bedroom we had a lovely relationship with them and knew that family was the centre of their world. The Garden Room had previously been used as a gym but we knew it had more potential to be a tranquil space for unwinding and watching a movie! The huge windows let in such wonderful light so we worked with a lighter palette to keep things fresh and calm. The bespoke modular (and stain guarded!) sofa meant the footstools moved perfectly into the corner units to create a sumptuous snuggly area perfect for film nights. We love the unique mirrors either side of the wood burning stove and the wooden sideboards offered some stylish storage space for life with a family. Feature lights for the apexes and lamps with metalwork detail helped bring smaller points of interest to the space. The large rug still left enough of the beautifully laid wooden floor on show, whose tone we reflected in the footstool tray. The olive tree in the basket helped bring a little of the outside in from the stunning view.
In the kitchen space, we again worked with some darker wood tones mixing in some colour and different yet complimentary finishes. The darkened oak dining table echoed the wood from the client’s console table, while the blue dining chairs picked up on the colour of the kitchen island. Glass pendants were installed over the island so as not to obscure the view out into the newly landscaped garden and swimming pool. We added a lovely soft bench cushion to the cosy reading corner next to some beautiful cabinetry to house all the recipe books you could need (finished with some of our favourite styling items of course!).
On the top floor we designed two bedrooms for visiting friends and regular family stays. Although subtle, we had a lot of fun choosing the little details such as the brass studs on the bespoke headboards, the fringe trims on cushions and the beautiful wood on the dressing tables. Bespoke lampshades were used on each of the lamps, which were a selection of smoked glass, ceramic and clear glass bases. Just enough detail in each room to give them each a different personality.
